Vehicle Retarders

In heavy commercial vehicles service brakes have to be supplemented by additional speed limiting system. These systems are called vehicle retarders. A vehicle retarder is an optional type of braking device that has been used to assi9st the service break on heavy duty trucks. The main purpose of using this auxillary breaking system is to limit the speed of the vehicle during long descecding. Retarder is a device used to slow down the vehicle and not to stop the vehicle. There are four types of retarders

1. Hydraulic retarder

2. Electric retarder

3. Engine brakes

4. Exhaust brakes
